Media Ethics
WEEK 6 VIDEO TASK
After watching all the videos for week 6 on Media ethics. I have gathered some thoughts about how each video really relate to the media ethics. One of the main thoughts that i was thinking of whilst i was engaging in all the videos was the idea of how especially in the first video how he is explaining about how the medium is the message, one of the thoughts i gathered from that is how one portrays/represents the message they are giving really has a significant impact on the person you are messaging. The mediums have a far greater impact on the fundamental shape and nature of society than any message that is delivered through that medium.
In the second video there was many thoughts that i gathered whilst watching the video. How to this day Dr Aleksandr Kogan still believes what he did was just and legal and he believe because he had a close working relationship with Facebook he had the right to obtain data from over 87 million profiles on Facebook. Everyone joins social media such as Facebook to have a private/non private life such as messaging your friends privately should be just private but posting a photo or a message is the non private side of social media, and then when you take the one thing within social media which is private away and take there messages and data and use it for your own good and still think your in the right.
The third video made me really think about dark patterns. I never knew what a dark pattern was or what it was associated with which is probably a bad thing now that i know of it, in the eyes of the company its the smartest thing to do to keep people on their website and browse more/ buy more of their product. But in the eyes of the viewer/consumer it is almost a trap and once you realize what the website is trying to do you seem some what of an idiot for even pressing or staying on the sight any longer so theoretically its legal and a good way to get business but morally i don't agree with it.This really relates to the law and legality side of media ethics.
The fourth Video really made me think about propaganda in today's social media society.
How propaganda has changed and how it was originally used to hire men for WWI by using poster to satisfy the feelings of the viewers and to tell them a different side of what there actually advertising. Also by advertising it everywhere such as radio television posters and the news people see and hear it everyday so it goes and stays in the back of their mind. This is smart for the person thats promoting it but as a viewer you cant do anything about it.
The blog post I am reviewing is by Shane, and his blog post is very easy to read and get important information from.
ReplyDeleteI really like Shane's thoughts on the videos given.
I also disagree with how our data is processed and kept by big companies to be sold on to third parties.
The image Shane included looks really cool, using the scales to show the importance of people and media.
Maybe the sentence"One of the main thoughts that i was thinking of" could be rephrased to "One of the key ideas that sprang to me was".
Maybe include a current propaganda example.
Maybe include company names for dark Patterns such as Amazon and eBay.

What I like about your blog Shane that it has a lot of information about what you have researched. I like how its all split into big paragraphs which contain a lot of information and its easier for people who can tell what section they are reading next making it easier to read.
ReplyDeleteMaybe make the first paragraph its own section?
In the first video what are the meduims?
From what I learned I was shocked to see that Aleksandr Kogan steal over 87 millon users private information it’s something that I’ve learned already but I am still shocked that such a man got away with doing all of that.
I like the blog Shane but maybe you should try add some subheadings to each paragraph like eg First Video, Second Video etc in Bold writing making it stand out more so that it makes it easier for people to read it.
I like the way that Shane provided a lot of information on the blog, which makes me feel that you know a lot about it, and the information make me feel very useful.
ReplyDeleteBut I also think that maybe you can add more oponin and exmaple in the first and third paragraphs?
In general, I like Shane’s blog very much and I have learned a lot from this blog
My favourite part of Shane’s blog was that he gained knowledge about the dark, pattern from watching the video. His blog easy to read and understand and was in his own words. Shane used simple words which were easy to understand, his layout was good and the depth he talked about the videos were also good. The two questions I would have is to explain the medium better. What is a medium? Also, explain how, in social media (facebook), a friend of a friend can get their information taken without them knowing. I have learned that posters are to bring people in and get to satisfy the feelings of the viewers. I have not found anything in this blog technique that I would used in my own writing in the future. I would also suggest making the blog shorter in future writing.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, the blog is good, has a nice layout, simple to understand and good to be written in your own words.
