Media literacy Week 4 Reading Task
WEEK 4 READING TASK
After thoroughly reading through the two opinion pieces and the journal by Vraga and Smithson I have gathered some thoughts and I would like talk about what I found most interesting and what I found most difficult to understand.
When reading through the first opinion piece I couldn't help to be interested in is that 62% of people are highly worried about misinformation online. Obviously getting false information online isn't the best but its probably because you didn't get real and trustworthy sources so you can only blame yourself for believing the first thing you see or hear online. Especially when they talked about misinformation on Covid-19 they stated "Across the first month of lockdown nearly half (48%) of Northern Ireland respondents say they had come across false or misleading information about Covid-19 in the previous week".
this is obviously not good but the good thing is that only 5% that came across misleading information would forward it to another person therefore the other percentage coming across misinformation either neglected it or found a more trustworthy site to seek the real information
After reading through the second opinion piece I couldn't help to be interested in the idea of monitoring how people source their information on such a huge topic in the world right now. Especially because of restrictions you need to be sourcing that sort of information from trustworthy sites or videos. And if they received that misinformation after they read it how much of an extent would the person be following the government or would they believe what they read on the untrustworthy site and follow the sites made up new restrictions per say.
