Media Ethics

After watching all of the media ethics videos for week 6, I've compiled a list of my opinions on how each video relates to media ethics. One of the main thoughts that came to mind while watching all of the videos was how, especially in the first video, he explains how the medium is the message, and one of the conclusions I came to was that how one portrays/represents the message they are giving has a significant impact on the person you are messaging. The channels have significantly more influence on society's essential shape and nature than any message provided through that medium.
The Medium is the Message
The medium is the message is such a interesting quote because what actually does this quote mean or where does it come from firstly the medium is the message is a phrase coined by the Canadian communication theorist Marshall McLuhan and the name of the first chapter in his Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, published in 1964. McLuhan proposes that a communication medium itself, not the messages it carries, should be the primary focus of study. He showed that artifacts as media affect any society by their characteristics, or content.

Second Video
In the second video it is conferred about the information on the incident that happened with Dr. Aleksandr Kogan and the actions that he did, What e did was he stole the private information of over 87 million users on Facebook to use them for his data which is just immoral in my eyes. During the second video, I had a lot of thoughts that I accumulated while watching it. Dr. Aleksandr Kogan still feels what he did was just and legal, and that he had the right to access data from over 87 million Facebook profiles since he had a close working connection with Facebook. I still find it crazy that the one thing in social media that is private was stolen off you and you didn't know it was happening for example you message your friend saying something just for them but it is also being taken and used for data for Dr. Aleksandr Kogan. Still to this day he thinks that what he done was correct and he doesn't in any way feel immoral for his actions i find this absolutely absurd.

Third Video
The third video got me thinking about dark patterns in a new way. I seemed to have no idea what a dark pattern was or what it was linked with, which is definitely a terrible thing now that I understand. However, in the perspective of the firm, it is the best way to keep customers on their website and browsing/buying more of their goods. However, in the perspective of the viewer/consumer, it is almost a trap, and once you grasp whatever the website is attempting to accomplish, you appear to be an imbecile for continuing or remaining on the site any longer, so while it is theoretically legal and a smart technique to encourage investment, I do not agree with it morally. This is mostly concerned with the legal and legal aspects of media ethics.

Fourth Video
After Watching the fourth video it got me thinking more about especially propaganda in todays society and how it effects us daily without us even knowing. Also how propaganda has changed to effect us and how it used to be Propaganda is most known for its use to hire men for WWI by utilizing posters to gratify the feelings of the viewers and to convey them a different side of what was being advertised. Also, by advertising it everywhere, such as on radio, television, and in the news, people will see and hear it on a daily basis, and it will stick in their minds. This is clever for the person pushing it, but as a spectator, you have no control over it.
After watching all the videos and doing more research on each topic I know have more of an understanding of what media ethics is all about.
